The Yeelen For Sustainable Development adventure begins in 2016, after a visit to the rural region of Kayes in Mali.

Moussa Camara and Abdoulaye Gackou, two young Franco-Malian men, visit their respective villages of origin, Bidadji and Lambidou. They find that once night falls, some inhabitants move around with kerosene lamps while others are forced to return home because of the lack of outside lighting.

The result is a social life that is almost non-existent after sunset, and above all, few solutions for operating electrical appliances. All the more so as no project to extend the electrification network is planned to date, given the small number of inhabitants, which makes the project unprofitable.

Faced with this problem, they decided to create Yeelen For Sustainable Development, an association that aims to electrify rural areas through renewable energy and vocational training of young people in solar photovoltaic energy in Africa.

OUR ACTIONS

Électrification

Training

Today, 600 million people have no access to electricity in Africa. In this context, our priority is to provide lighting in public squares in remote villages that are excluded from the national grid, to bring energy to schools to enable students to access educational content via computers and to be able to study after dark. Health centres are also targeted, particularly maternity wards. This will not only make it possible to store medicines and vaccines for longer, but also to enable women to give birth in better conditions and in complete safety.
The transfer of skills is one of our missions. We want to give young people the opportunity to acquire the skills, knowledge and know-how in the future-oriented photovoltaic solar energy sector. They will thus be able to obtain added value for the world of work and/or entrepreneurship. In partnership with a recognised training centre, the training takes place over a week with a theoretical and practical part completely adapted to the realities of the field.

SORRY SIDIBE

Electrical technician

"I've been in the energy sector for more than 20 years, starting at the age of 11 with my father who was also a technician. He taught me everything and I owe him a lot. For me, working with the association is an opportunity to expand my customer base and allows me to contribute to the development of my country.

"Technician in metallurgy for over 30 years, I was trained in Ivory Coast. I came back to Mali to use my skills for the development of my country. The energy sector is new to me but I am aware of its importance, which encouraged me to get involved with the association.
